Strainers in water pipe lines
Protection filters
T strainers
T strainers are basket filters with a vertical construction form. They are inline filters and their filtering element is a perforated sheet. Its rather large filtration degree (between 1mm and 3 mm) makes it the ideal solution to protect the upstream part of the system from larger and unwanted debris such small stones, leaves, branches or even small animals that can sometimes end up in the pipe, if the water is for examples taken from lakes or rivers. Typically it can be used as pump protection.
Mesh screen filters
Mesh filters can have several construction forms so that they can be chosen based on the system layout. The filtering element is made of a layer of fine wire. This layer is added onto a perforated screen that acts as support since the wire mesh itself would not be able to withstand the typical flows and pressures. Using this filtering element it is possible to reach much finer filtration degrees down to a few µm. For this reason mesh filters usually have a lower dirt holding capacity than basket type strainers with perforated sheet metal as a filtration element.
They are therefore used in applications where the content of particles tends to be lower, such as closed circuits. A typical application can be protection of a heat-exchanger.
